Annual International Festival of Contemporary Art

ARTBAT FEST

The ARTBAT FEST Festival of Contemporary Art was created in 2010 at the initiative of a group of art figures, artists, and art historians with the support of local businesses. The site chosen for the Festival was an area on the pedestrian part of Zhibek Zholy Street between Ablai Khan Street and Furmanov Street, popularly called the “Arbat.” The name of the Festival – ARTBAT FEST – came from this location in a harmonious way: Art, Art+Bat (place) and Fest.

In 2011, the Festival became an international. At the end of 2011, the Eurasian Cultural Alliance was founded in Almaty to expand the scope of the Festival and to establish international contacts. This organization is now the official organizer of all subsequent ARTBAT FEST.

Since 2012, ARTBAT FEST has gone beyond the limits of Arbat – the installations began to be installed in unusual locations in the city, and the festival program was replenished with indoor exhibitions.

Over 9 years of the festival more than 250 artists and curators from 26 countries took part in its work.

this is an opportunity for citizens to get a quality cultural product at the world level, without leaving Almaty

this is a way to declare our Republic on the world stage as a country with a developed culture and art

this is an educational platform for all those interested and engaged in contemporary art in our city

this is an opportunity for creative realization of both masters of modern art of Kazakhstan and young artists of our country

Lesley Ann Gray, ArtAsiaPacific contributor:

"Now in its eighth year, Artbat Fest created a vibrant urban image for Almaty without any governmental support from the city, relying solely on private donors. This year, the event’s organizers partnered with the Eurasian Cultural Alliance, ArtTube (Russia), the Zurich University of Arts (ZHdK) and the Soros Foundation for a series of exhibitions that sprawled across the city, to the suburbs and back".
